From June 2020, websites that use theMagento 1 platform for all of their eCommerce needs will no longer receive thecrucial updates that ensure a safe and easy shopping experience. In operationsince 2014, Magento 1.9 has servedits users well – but with a fast-changing technological landscape renderingmuch of its infrastructure outdated and withonly 12 months to go until the updates stop, now is the ideal time to think about migrating over to Magento 2.

But aside from being able to receive all ofthe key updates, why should an online business with the platform make theinvestment in a Magento 2 migration? Let's delve into it...

Why Migrate Away From Magneto 1.9?

With Magento 2 being a completely different platform from Magento 1, many store owners may be wondering what impact the new code base will have – both on the performance of the website, as well as how the custom functionality is implemented.

To understand the capabilities of Magento 2, website operators should first be aware of what has been overhauled from Magento 1.9. The continuing development of web applications has seen a number of issues appear within its functionality that Magento 2 can correct, such as:

Full-page caching = improved load times.

Magento 1 does not contain a full-page caching mechanism and is not built for a large volume of transactions within a short period of time. To put it simply, its load times are slow by 2019 standards. In comparison, Magento 2 has an improved structure that reduces load times by a vast amount.

Clearly, having a slow-loading site will have an impact on the experiences of customers; likely leading them to click away and go elsewhere – directly impacting the site's conversion rates and pushing them towards competitors as a result.

The improved structure of Magento 2 allows it to perform 'full-page caching'; the ability to render pages in full-size for viewers, quickly. Not only will possessing such an ability improve customer experience, but having quicker load times will also be great for marketing techniques, such as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) too – keeping the website high in a search engine's results page.

Improved Admin Interface

Whilst Magento 1.9 offers a number of tools for website owners to customise their sites, the admin interface used to put in place changes has received much negative feedback over the years. The platform is not built for mobile design and contains a layout that can be somewhat confusing for first-time users.

These issues are solved by Magento 2, as it has introduced a far more responsive and easy-to-navigate layout that will get the user to where they want to go to, faster and without over whelming them with too much information and options.

Furthermore, the interface used for the product page(s) will be far easier to work with, as users will not be forced to click on a number of tabs to get their product created. Unlike Magento 1, the user can also easily add images and video to product pages; video URLs from sites such as YouTube and Vimeo can be inserted with ease, as this is a feature that is default with Magento 2.

Enhanced end user experience

Ultimately, the point of a fast,easy-to-use and secure eCommerce store is to give customers the confidence that their time (and money) is being spent wisely. Fortunately, Magento 2 can produce a much-improved customer interface for them to use.

Whilst the previous Magento platform offers a one-page checkout, it involved 4+steps for the customers to navigate through before they can review and submit their order. With so many steps creating a long queuing time, this increases the likelihood of customers abandoning their shopping carts. Magento 2 addresses this issue with a 2-step checkout process that is much easier to view and navigate through. It is also much more flexible in allowing customers to sign in to their accounts and continue their checkout process.

Those were just a few of the issues that Magento 2 is able to correct from Magento 1.9. If you're an eCommerce trader who is interested in migrating away from your website's current platform, the dedicated open source web design team here at Code Media can help.
